First Page : Haruki had been in the bathroom for almost an hour. Anything was better than tiptoeing around his wife. Ever since losing his business in the black recession, and being forced to take a poorly paid office job, his home life had become unbearable. The economic downturn meant not only bankruptcy, but moving into a cramped one-room apartment. He could never understand why his wife hadn’t left him and moved back with her family. But as time passed, he realized she took some pleasure from his humiliation. Now that she earned more money, working two jobs, that she supported them in many ways, she could delegate household tasks-the woman’s work-giving her a sense of superiority.     It’s hard to be around someone you once loved when they treat you with the icy indifference of a stranger. No, worse than a stranger, an enemy.
